Re: HHS Health Care Mandate

The Catholic Church, as a matter of doctrine, and we, as members of the Body of Christ, oppose the use of contraception, sterilization and particularly the morning-after pill since it often serves to induce an abortion. To require that we provide coverage for these services individually or within our institutions forces us to make an impossible choice: either we violate our own moral code of conduct or deny our employees health care coverage. These options are unconscionable. This is a deliberate invasion into the beliefs and practices of faith-based organizations as well as a direct violation of every believer’s freedom of conscience.

Our nation is built upon the three-legged stool of the First Amendment. Our precious freedoms of religion, speech, and assembly underlie everything this nation is, and everything this nation has ever accomplished. Religious liberty gives us the freedom to preach the Truth. And the Truth is that pregnancy is not a disease, nor is the natural fertility of a woman a disease.

The mandate to force religious institutions and people of faith to provide health insurance that pays for contraception, abortion and sterilization is a serious violation of religious liberty and must be immediately denounced by our lawmakers and national leaders.
